Abstract: |

IP based voice communication systems combines all the features of an analog system with numerous additional features making a genuinely flexible communication system. Currently such systems are implemented using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. Though VoIP supports scalability of network and flexibility in enhancing the capabilities of network nodes, there are considerable impairments. Due to packetization of speech signals, the impairments like delay, jitter, decoder clock offset and packet loss are observed. Open Media Networking Architecture (OMNEO) is the newly blooming technology to overcome these impairments. This paper gives general overview of VoIP technology followed by its advantages and disadvantages in brief. A comparison of present IP based communication systems available in the market released by the telecommunication firms is tabulated. The paper concludes with the basics of OMNEO technology and its comparison with VoIP. |
