Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) provide enormous employment potential and have been found to promote and accelerate development at significantly low capital investment. In recent years the sector has registered higher growth rate compared to the overall industrial sector and has shown admirable innovativeness and adaptability to survive the recent economic downturn. However, despite the significant contributions this sector too faces several critical issues like prevalence of age old technologies which brings inefficiencies associated with resource and energy utilization with it which requires immediate attention. Most foundry units fall under MSME category in India. 12.24% of global castings are produced in India. If energy intensity per unit production of MSME foundry in particular is to be brought closer to that of organized large scale sectors then energy conservation is the only way that can do so with efficient use of energy and steep rejection of energy wastage without suppression of demand for energy use. Energy conservation opportunity of a foundry unit has been explored in this work.
