Abstract:

The increase in prices of materials for building construction is causing a lot of concern, creating need for research into indigenous materials as alternatives in building and rural infrastructures. Research efforts are directed towards enhancing the use of locally and readily available material such as lateritic soils for the construction. The knowledge of characteristics and performance of laterized concrete is a prerequisite to the accurate design of structures built of this material. Some of the structural characteristics of laterized concrete are studied at the predetermined optimum mix proportion and that used for general reinforced cement concrete work. The results show that the values obtained for elasticityModulus, flexural strength, Split tensile strength are higher at optimum mix proportion than at the conventional mix ratio in cement concrete. Only density value is lower at the former mix ratio than the latter. In this investigation, percentage laterite content (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%)exposure periods of 7, 28, 60, and 90 days on the uniaxial compressive, flexure and splitting tensile strength tests of laterized concrete were investigated and also the effect ofvarying percentages of sulphuric acid (H2SO4) concentrations 0%, 1%, 3% and 5%, exposure periods of 7, 28, 60, and 90 days on the uniaxial compressive, flexure and splitting tensile strength tests of laterized concrete were investigated. The dimensions of specimen are 150 X 150 X 150mm cube, cylindricalmould of 150 mm diameter & 300 mm height and 100 X 100 X 500 mm long concrete beam/prismof laterized concrete were used.Data results revealed that the laterite fines used could satisfactorily replace the sand up to 30%, fix the laterite content as 30% again cast the cubes and exposed to varying sulphuric acid(H2SO4) concentrations 0%, 1%, 3%, 5% exposure periods of 7, 28, 60, and 90 days, and the compressive strength of concrete at these ages were investigated. The results of the tests indicated that thecompressive strength significantly reduces with increase in acid concentration, immersion period and laterite content.
